SES BTS 3: Creating the Shnorax

A bunch of incredibly talented people helped out with our new sketch, Special Eating Society, so we thought it’d be cool to show what goes on behind the scenes. Over the next two weeks, keep an eye out and see how it all came together!

Voting is still open for the sketch, which is part of Funny or Die’s first annual Sketch Comedy Challenge… So go watch our video and click FUNNY so we win! Anyway, without further ado:

Special Eating Society Behind The Scenes #3: Creating the Shnorax

The always-talented Sarah Dorsey did makeup for the sketch, including the creation of The Shnorax. We wanted an original creature, but we also wanted to pay homage to Dr. Seuss’s Lorax.

Sarah pulled everything together in less than twenty-four hours with the help of Larry Bones Effects pieces. Yellow flocking was used to make the Shnorax look furry, and crape wool was used for the eyebrows and mustache. Sarah and her assistant Haley worked on Scott Gairdner for a little under four hours before he emerged as the Shnorax. Here are some pictures of the process:

We originally cast a severed styrofoam head to play the Schnorax, but he had to drop out so we went with Scott Gairdner.

Hey look, it's the bastard child of Hellboy and some sort of regal, humanoid lion!

Haley works in the background while Scott mustaches in front. MUSTACHES!

Two-Face made a cameo appearance in the kitchen.
